Massachusetts DOT Urges Safe Travel, Offers Free Coffee at All Service Plazas

MassDOT advises residents and visitors to travel safely during the upcoming holiday season, check our online resources, and use public transportation where possible.

As always, I-90 Exit 9 connecting I-84 to Connecticut and New York experiences heavy traffic on peak holiday travel days. Drivers are encouraged to consider travel during the early morning or after 8 p.m. Traffic congestion is also typical at the I-95 and I-495 Turnpike interchanges along with I-495 and I-93 northbound leading into New Hampshire.

If you have yet to do so, now is the time to sign up for EZPass and avoid cash tolls.

Free coffee will be served at all MassDOT service plazas between 10 p.m. on Christmas night, Friday, December 25, until 5 a.m. on Saturday, December 26, and between 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, Thursday, December 31, until 5 a.m. on Friday, January 1, 2016.

I-95 Maine Turnpike Offering Free Coffee to Overnight Travelers During Holidays

The Maine Turnpike Authority is encouraging holiday travelers to take break for safety and will treat I-95 Turnpike customers to a complimentary cup of coffee overnight Christmas Eve into Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. both nights.

According to the National Sleep Foundation’s website, its not always easy to tell when you’re too tired to drive. Some signs that it’s time to pull over are:

  • Difficulty focusing, frequent blinking, or heavy eyelids
  • Trouble remembering the last few miles driven; missing exits or traffic signs
  • Yawning repeatedly or rubbing your eyes
  • Drifting from your lane, tailgating, or hitting a shoulder rumble strip

Many travelers will be traveling very late or very early during the holidays and to help them stay alert, complimentary coffee will be offered at all five Maine Turnpike Service Plazas from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Turnpike Service Plazas, operated by HMSH

Updated – Restaurants Open Christmas Eve and Day 2015

Not all of us will be home for Christmas, or comfortably seated with friends and family for a Christmas feast… some of us will be on the road.

I-95 travelers looking for a holiday meal can find it quite difficult. You’re tired and hungry so you jump of an exit only to find that every restaurant is closed.

An increasing number of chain restaurants are choosing to remain open during the holidays, or at least opening for limited hours to meet customer demand.

Here’s out list of chain restaurants open for business on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2015. (This listing will be updated as additional information becomes available.)

Restaurants located at Interstate Service Plazas and Welcome Centers may be required to stay open.

DelDOT Suspends Lane Closures for the Holidays

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) reminds drivers to expect extra traffic in Delaware starting as early as Monday, December 21. Planned lane closures on Delaware’s multi-lane highways will be suspended at midnight on Thursday, December 24, and will resume at midnight on Monday, December 28. Traffic accidents and other unpredictable types of transportation incidents may cause lane closures and/or delays.

The warmer than normal temperatures forecast for the holidays means more pedestrians and bicyclists will likely be interacting with traffic this year. Motorists are asked to be on the lookout for both. Pedestrians are reminded to use designated sidewalks and marked road crossings; and bicyclists are reminded to use bike paths and lanes where available. Both should wear bright clothing and use a light, if out during night or low light conditions.

DelDOT’s Transportation Management Center (TMC) will monitor and adjust computerized traffic sign
