Massachusetts DOT Urges Safe Travel, Offers Free Coffee at All Service Plazas

MassDOT advises residents and visitors to travel safely during the upcoming holiday season, check our online resources, and use public transportation where possible.

As always, I-90 Exit 9 connecting I-84 to Connecticut and New York experiences heavy traffic on peak holiday travel days. Drivers are encouraged to consider travel during the early morning or after 8 p.m. Traffic congestion is also typical at the I-95 and I-495 Turnpike interchanges along with I-495 and I-93 northbound leading into New Hampshire.

If you have yet to do so, now is the time to sign up for EZPass and avoid cash tolls.

Free coffee will be served at all MassDOT service plazas between 10 p.m. on Christmas night, Friday, December 25, until 5 a.m. on Saturday, December 26, and between 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, Thursday, December 31, until 5 a.m. on Friday, January 1, 2016.

Because of an expected reduction in traffic volumes during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, the I-93 HOV Zipper Lane will not be deployed on the Thursday and Friday of those two weeks.

Please remember winter driving skills and tips for preparation. Examples: motorists should drive with headlights on, observe posted speed limits, never drink and drive, make sure everyone is using a seatbelt and clear snow from vehicles before driving. More information on safe winter driving is available at the MassDOT website.

Additionally, the Highway Assistance Patrol (HAP) program will be available to help if incidents arise. The HAP program, sponsored by MAPFRE Insurance patrols routes in Metro Boston, Worcester, Springfield & Cape Cod (seasonal) during peak travel times with extended holiday routes in heavy traffic areas. There is also an Incident Response Vehicle fleet of flatbed tow trucks, assisting along Interstate 93, the Tobin Bridge, Ted Williams Tunnel, Sumner Tunnel and Callahan Tunnel patrolling 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
