Expect delays, especially in urban areas. This is one of the busiest travel holidays so leave yourself plenty of time.  Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving will see traffic delays between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., with particularly heavy traffic between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. That return trip on Sunday may be just as bad. Traveling the highways during the extended Thanksgiving holiday weekend can present its own set of challenges. Traffic can bring heavily traveled routes like I-95 to a standstill, adding hours to normally speed-limit trips. Here are some tips…

• If possible avoiding I-95 on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving as well as the following Sunday. If you must travel on these days, drive during the overnight hours.
• Be aware that the day after Thanksgiving is a notoriously busy shopping day. You can count on standstill traffic throughout the day around urban shopping areas.
• Plan your route ahead of time and travel with a GPS system, smartphone or printed map that will allow you to choose an alternate route if you see a problem.
• Avoid larger urban areas by using circumfrencial routes. Boston’s I-495, Richmond’s I-295 and Jacksonville’s I-295 can save you some time during high traffic periods
• Avoid unnecessary delays by bring along an E-ZPass or change for tolls
• Be sure to take along  plenty of snacks.
• Fill your gas tank before you hit the road. While on the road, fill up off a rural exit. While you may pay a penny or two more per gallon, it will pay off by not waiting in line at an urban station.
• If it’s a multi-day trip, you may want to make your hotel reservation ahead of time. Rooms fill up fast and “walk-in” are scarce during the Thanksgiving holiday.

On the plus side, most state highway agencies require contractors to shut down work on large road construction projects during the extended Thanksgiving holiday weekend, so that shouldn’t be an issue.  Visit the I-95 Exit Guide website for help in your travel planning

I would encourage anyone traveling these popular routes to visit these websites before your next trip or use their services while traveling!
