Savannah Candy Kitchen, Georgia
Disclaimer #1: If you go into the Savannah Candy Kitchen, you’re probably coming out with a bag of rich, sugary treats. Disclaimer #2: If children accompany you into Savannah Candy Kitchen, you’re definitely coming out with a bag of rich, sugary treats, and maybe multiple bags. At the Savannah Candy Kitchen, it’s like everything from Willy Wonka’s Candy Factory was removed, only to fit it all into this candy shop on River Street in Savannah. From floor to ceiling, and in every nook and cranny, there is every type of candy and chocolate you can think of and probably some you’ve never heard of.
I walked by this candy shop in Savannah several times, resisting the urge, but finally followed the crowd. The shop is split into three different sections: ice cream, homemade chocolate and candy. The ice cream area is just like most ice cream shops, featuring many different flavors and many different waffle cones. The candy room features every type of candy you can imagine, from Tootsie rolls to salt water taffy to jawbreakers and much more. Most likely you, and probably your kids, will spend most of your time in the homemade chocolate room. You can enjoy a warm, fresh praline, while your children watch the master candy makers creating fudge, praline and other treats.
Unlike smaller candy shops, the Savannah Candy Kitchen offers the chance to not only enjoy a range of sweet treats, but also see how it is made while walking around. Although you can buy pounds of homemade fudge at a time, I recommend starting with a quarter or half-pound block of fudge. The fudge is extremely thick and rich and you can’t eat an entire block at one time. Half-pound blocks of fudge start at $7, and you can buy a pound and get a half-pound for free.
