Camping in Big Basin Redwoods State Park is one of our favorite summer activities. Just an hour away from the Bay Area, Big Basin is truly a camping gem, with tall redwoods rising into the sky, providing shelter and a unique California camping experience.

Famous for: Big Basin Redwoods State Park is California’s oldest State Park.

Admission: $10/vehicle for day use, camping extra

Families with young kids will like: With lots of fallen trees in the campgrounds, my kids always enjoy exploring around our tent site. They like to climb the fallen trees and make up nature games. For more ambitious kids, you might like to hike up to Sempervirens Falls, an easy hike up from the campgrounds. And my kids have really enjoyed the Saturday night campfires at the Ranger Station.

Families with teenagers will like: If your teenagers are active hikers, consider hiking the Skyline to the Sea Trail to Waddell Beach, which offers outstanding ocean views. Occasionally, these more strenuous hikes are lead by a park ranger, check with the ranger’s station for more details.

Easy site seeing: Leave your car at the park headquarters, and after checking out the Nature Museum, walk the Redwood Loop Trail, an easy, accessible path through some of the oldest trees in the park, including Mother of the Forest, Father of the Forest and the Chimney Tree.

Best campground in the park: After camping at Big Basin on and off the last 10 years, we have decided that our favorite campgrounds are Sempervirens and Blooms Creek. Note: campsites are first come, first served, and on the summer weekends, reservations are required and folks are at the Ranger Station right at opening time to secure their favorite spot.

Best non-camping option: Check out nearby Costanoa for a camping experience unlike no other. Cabins, restaurants and electricity make this a special camping experience!

Best months to visit for weather: June through September are the best months to visit for consistent weather, but summer can also have cool mornings, with fog coming off the ocean.

Best months to visit to avoid crowds: Late summer/early fall, after school is back in session. October is a great time to visit, with mild daytime weather and cooler evenings, perfect for snuggling in your sleeping bag.

Nearest major cities: Santa Cruz is the nearest major city, and depending on the route you take, you may pass through Boulder Creek and Scotts Valley, two towns in the Santa Cruz mountains where you can stock up on camping provisions.

Virginia legislators and the governor have once again extended the provision that allows hybrid vehicles, even with solo drivers, to use the carpool lanes in Northern Virginia. It is now set to expire July 1, 2011. (They’ll extend it again next year.) This supposedly temporary measure dates back to the days when governments wanted to encourage the purchase of hybrid vehicles. If people bought the more efficient cars, they could get a faster trip to and from work by using the HOV lanes. But the need for an incentive to buy hybrids disappeared long ago, along with low gas prices. The pollution coming from three hybrids with solo drivers in the HOV-3 lanes of I-95 can top that of one SUV carrying three people. Plus, the unrestricted use of hybrids contributes to congestion in the HOV lanes and decreases the incentive to carpool. Del. Thomas

The ribbon cutting on Wednesday will mark the reopening of the Interstate 85 north and south rest stops. They are two of eight set to reopen on Wednesday. Others reopening include the two rest stops at mile marker 48 on I-66 in Manassas; the two at mile marker 232 on I-81 in Mt. Sidney; and the two at mile marker 155 on I-95 in Dale City. The rest areas were among 19 rest stops that were closed last year by then-Gov. Tim Kaine to save the Virginia Department of Transportation $9 million. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will be opening soon!

Universal Orlando Resort is still keeping a tight lip on the official opening date of their new Harry Potter land, but judging by this new promotion it must be soon.  Universal and NBC’s Today Show are teaming up (although, technically they’re already on the same team) to send a lucky class to opening day of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in the Islands of Adventure theme park.

To enter the contest a teacher must fill out some forms, have the students’ parents sign a waiver and answer the question “Why is my class extraordinary?” in a video.

According to AAA Mid-Atlantic, the average price of a gallon of regular gas reached $2.78 Friday but leveled off over the weekend. Today’s price — the highest in a year and a half– is 6 cents more than a  week ago and are up 13 cents over the past month.

Rising crude oil prices and a recovering economy are propelling the increase, and with the summer travel season approaching, the Oil Price Information Service is projecting that gasoline will hit the $3 mark between April and June.

Crystal clear, 72ºF water, for which Wekiwa is famous, is ready to be explored with your snorkel, by canoe, or just wading in the River. Guests are able to rent canoes for the day or overnight from the park starting at just $35/day. Guided and self-guided tours begin at Canoe Beach Landing with many options depending on your party size or your length of visit. Overnight camping is available with or without all of your sleeping necessities provided.

If horseback riding is your idea of exploring nature, Rock Springs Riding Ranch provides horses and trail guides to assist you on your adventure. Kids of all ages are welcomed to experience riding horseback. Pony rides start at just $12 per child under 8, and 1-hour guided horseback rides start at $37/person.

Nature trails are open to walkers, hikers, runners, and bikers and reaches 9 miles of park viewing. Trail maps are available at the park. Some riders may find the course a challenge, the multi-use trail is available for guests to experience Florida’s nature.

Some of the best bird watching and wildlife spotting is available on the 1/8-mile long boardwalk over-looking the springs and through the swamps of the park. Bring your camera and binoculars to spot some of Central Florida’s greatest natural treasures.

History and nature buffs will surely appreciate the recently opened Nature Center which includes live native wildlife and opportunities to learn about local habitats. Visitors will learn how to better live off of the land and respect the Earth’s resources.

Locals and visitors can take advantage of some of the pavilions and meeting spaces found around the park. Recreation Hall and Dining Hall can be rented out together or separately to accommodate up to 150 people apiece for your gathering.

Florida state parks are open from 8 a.m. until sundown 365 days a year.
