Connecticut Considers I-95 Toll Options
The state of Connecticut is preparing a $1.4 million study on express-lane tolls along the state’s I-95 corridor, potentially without the use of tollbooths, the New Haven Register newspaper reported.
One particular proposal would convert Connecticut’s portion of I-95 — from the New York state line to Rhode Island — to an electronic toll road, versus adding express lanes that would allow motorists to bypass slower lanes, the paper said.
Also under consideration would be placing toll facilities on the state’s borders with neighboring New York and Rhode Island, though a Federal Highway Administration official who attended a meeting in the state last week said that was a separate issue, the Register reported.
Connecticut, which used to have multiple toll booths along I-95, dismantled them after a fatal accident in 1983 at a toll plaza in Stratford that killed seven people, the Associated Press reported.
I-95 Metro New York Road Work This Week

Plans Move Ahead on I-95 Tolls in Virginia
VDOT members met earlier this month to discuss their plans to move on a toll project to fund improvements to the I-95 corridor. The plan would charge drivers a toll along the interstate between mile marker 126 (just south of Fredericksburg) to the North Carolina state line. VDOT released their findings on the state of this corridor and stated that 80% of the bridges on I-95 are over 40 years old, 72% of the pavement is in need of maintenance, and that by 2035, travel time is projected to increase by 40%! To remedy these problems over the next 25 years, VDOT projects costs would equal around $12.1 billion. Looking at the revenue per lane mile for transportation construction in Virginia, we’re running out of funding for these projects, and this is why these tolls have been proposed.
VDOT estimates the toll program could raise $50 million a year in revenue. If an agreement is reached, the tolls would be up and running in over a year from now.
The revenue from these tolls will be used to make pavement, structural, operational, capacity and safety improvements throughout the corridor. These funds cannot be used outside of I-95.

Lane Closures at Night Next Week on Northbound Deck of I-95 Girard Point Bridge in Philadelphia
King of Prussia – Northbound lane closures will be in effect on the Interstate 95 Girard Point Bridge on Sunday through Thursday (April 29-May 3) from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. for the replacement of deteriorated expansion joints, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said today.
The bridge’s northbound deck will be reduced from three lanes to two at 8 p.m. each night, and then restricted to one open lane at midnight on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings (April 30, May 1, May 2). All lanes will reopen each morning by 5 a.m.
This operation to replace old expansion joints on the bridge is part of PennDOT’s $70.3 million project to rehabilitate and paint the double-deck structure over the Schuylkill River. Construction on the bridge is scheduled to finish in July.
PennDOT’s improvement project is extending the life, aesthetics and ride quality of the steel truss bridge, which is 5,163 feet long and 56 feet wide. Crews have repaired and strengthened structural steel members; painted the steel structure; resurfaced the riding pavement with latex concrete; and cleaned the drainage system.
The contractor is the tri-venture of Buckley & Company, Inc. of Philadelphia, Alpha Painting & Construction Company, Inc. of Baltimore, Md., and Liberty Maintenance, Inc. of Campbell, Ohio.
PennDOT reminds motorists they can log on to www.511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions on I-95 and other major highways before heading out.
