Of Mice and Moments

Sure, Valentine’s Day is more about romance of the couples variety — and it’s on a Tuesday, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use the excuse of a candy-filled holiday to take a mini-vacation. Am I right?

Personally, I’m a fan of the family theme park outing. Disneyland and Walt Disney World (dinner at Victoria and Albert’s, anyone?) always have something up their, um, glove(?) for Valentine’s Day, which means fun for the whole family. What? Disney is totally romantic.

If theme parks aren’t your thing how about a cabin stay in one of our many state and national parks? It may be brisk out, but a few hours of hiking or mountain biking will warm up the family in no time.

Of course, there is always the option of getting a babysitter and, hopefully, a reservation at some restaurant with a special holiday menu (see, pricy) and being one more sucker in a suit — don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with that, but why wait until Valentine’s Day to do it? Go out on any Tuesday, it will be less crowded and a lot more meaningful. Spend Valentine’s Day with the entire family, that’s the love, people.

Myrtle Beach earns popularity for beach adventures and seafood delights but there’s another must do experience for the South Carolina hot spot. You can not leave Myrtle Beach without a good shag. Shag dancing, or the Carolina shag to be specific, is the state dance and there’s no better place to try it than Fat Harold’s.

This smooth-toed derivative of the jitterbug dance is said to have originated in Myrtle Beach during the late 30s and it continues to thrive in nightclubs throughout the area. This stylish swing dance is a point of pride for seasoned shaggers and Fat Harold’s Beach Club is their official headquarters. The dimly lit club is packed every night with dancers gliding across the floor in the required leather-soled shoes. Djs pump beach music or live bands perform mid tempo rhythms perfect for the dance. For the rhythm-impaired, there’s even free weekly shag lessons so there’s no excuse not to join the fun. Imagine sliding across the floor with nimble spins and twirls and you’re half way there. Fat Harold’s is a Myrtle Beach institution with friendly servers and proper rights to the moniker, “home of the shag.” If you’re not in the mood for a burger or hot dog at Fat Harold’s shuffle on over to the Landmark Bar & Grill on the boardwalk and sample the bountiful helpings of fish tacos and chips and salsa.

If you’re a fan of kayaking like I am, you probably enjoy the sensation of of gliding across the water and feeling the gentle waves below you. Well I discovered a different sensation while kayaking through Huntington Beach Sate Park, near Myrtle Beach. I felt it shortly after I started paddling and felt something stuck on my paddle. It was smelly, greenish brown and it’s called pluff mud.

A pelican posing

Out guides explained that pluff mud was part of the unique joys of paddling through salt marshes. This thick mud has been known to pull off boots, shoes and paddles that have been stuck in it. Suffice it to say, I really built up my biceps between the pluff mud and spartina cord grass during the two hour tour. Black River Outdoors Center guides kayakers through the marshes and salt water creeks of Huntington State Park and it’s a really unique tour. We paddled through Drunken Jack Island, which is supposed to harbor Black Beard’s treasures and I spotted pelicans, ospreys and herons, though not the alligators that are supposed to hang around the marsh. I highly recommend waterproof pants for the tour because all that splashing doesn’t just land on the kayak. All that paddling works up an appetite so make your way to Bliss Restaurant and Lounge for a relaxed and elegant lunch. Try the pan-seared flounder with prosciutto hash.

Wine tasting can be a lot of fun, what with all that sipping of various wines but a trip to Grapefull Sisters Vineyard creates a total wine experience that’s not just about tasting. Located just 17 miles north of Myrtle Beach, this sprawling working vineyard offers gardens, a bed and breakfast, an RV camping ground and yes, wine tasting.

Grapefull Sisters non-alcoholic wine

The 28-acre Grapefull Sisters Vineyard has been in the Suggs family for nine generations. Surrounded by tobacco farm land, the picturesque vineyard boasts a pond and roaming geese and ducks. But the star of the place is the Muscadine grape, native to the area and reputed to be 40 times higher in antioxidants than regular grapes. I can’t attest to the health benefits of Muscadine wine but I can verify the flavorful sweetness. Wine tastings are held every day for $5 and I tasted eight different wines using the handy tasting notes that the sisters provide. Bottles are sold for $12 to $15 and I guarantee you will be compelled to buy a few. The vineyard also sells homemade jams and even non-alcoholic wine. The three-bedroom inn, Inn D’Vine, supplies a country cottage themed cozy space with antiques and handmade quilts. For the more adventurous, the sisters also offer glamping or glamorous camping, in an elevated, heated, two-bedroom tent outfitted with a wine basket and strawberry and blueberry stuffed French toast. For a more traditional hotel experience, Inlet Sports Lodge provides rustic yet elegant rooms and an upscale gourmet restaurant.

Photos courtesy of Rosalind Cummings-Yeates

Disclosure, the wine tasting was part of a sponsored media trip.

Mix It Up

I love going to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and marveling at the paintings of the Impressionist Masters. My brother inherited all of my mother’s artistic abilities, so I have always wondered what it felt like to be able to create or replicate something beautiful. When we were invited to a friend’s milestone birthday party at The Paint Bar in Newton, my only question was whether or not alcohol would be served. That’s the only way I could survive an evening of painting lessons.

Our Guide For The Evening

With the word “bar” in the name of the place, it was confirmed that beer and wine would be available and so I confirmed our attendance. When we arrived that evening, we found a very bright and packed room filled with blank canvases awaiting our creative works. After being outfitted with smocks, the appropriate paint, brushes and an adult beverage, we chose our stools and awaited instruction. I must say that the example of the painting we would be recreating as a group that evening was incredibly intimidating. Why couldn’t the birthday girl have selected something perhaps less pretty but far easier looking?

Our Incredible Teacher

Our instructor, Ellie, for the evening was vibrant, fun and reassuring. She made everything idiot-proof and empowering. We were not treated like children (though family days on Sundays are a big hit) or artistes, but instead were considered able adults with hidden talent simply needing to be coaxed out. I knew we were in good hands when she pointed out the importance of distinction between your drink container and your brush water. Picking up a cup of watered down paint instead of your beer or wine is not a mistake you want to make. The lesson here? Pay close attention to your task rather than getting lost in the beauty of your art.

Beer On The Left, Brush Water On The Right

At The Paint Bar, your instructor guides all in attendance through the step by step process of recreating a sample painting chosen in advance. Which brush to use, how much paint to apply, when and how much to mix colors and brush stroke techniques are all provided along the way. As your instructor demonstrates on their canvas, you paint along on your own. While you are completing your efforts the instructor wanders the floor and answers any questions or doles out individual advice as requested. Criticism and comparison are discouraged. Focus on your own creation.

Music of all varieties is played for entertainment and there are those beverages for sale to keep you loose and smiling. During drying time, be sure to grab some take-out from next door so that all those drinks don’t go to your head and interfere with your fine detail strokes. They sell vending machine style snacks and you can bring in your own cake or other food item if you like, but there isn’t much room to lay it out or time to eat it up. Your two hours are mostly spent creating that work of art.

Our Hidden Talent Revealed

As the time went by and the basic background and forms were done, our confidence grew and we were ready to be let loose with our painting to add our own personal flair – treating the guide painting as just that, a guide. At the end of the night, it was amazing to see all the different takes on the same work. I won’t say whose was better – that would be against the rules of fun. But we were pretty proud of ourselves. And of our friends’ interpretations too. We carefully stowed our nearly dry paintings in the car before moving along to snacks and drinks with a belly dancer down the street. It was a night of artistic expression after all. And thanks to The Paint Bar, we’ve got some new artwork hanging on the wall.

I’ve been to New Hampton, New Hampshire (or through it as the case may be), but I didn’t spot this diner. Too bad, I’m a sucker for cool signs, romantic gestures, and bacon.

Ausable Chasm in the Winter

This Christmas break my family hopped in our Toyota Prius and road-tripped to the Lake Champlain region of the Adirondacks. Although the ski conditions near our home in Massachusetts were just awful due to the unseasonably warm weather we’ve been experiencing, the conditions were great in the Adirondacks.

To start, we traveled to Plattsburgh by way of Vermont, taking the Grand Isle to Plattsburgh ferry. It was incredibly easy to take the ferry, which runs every few minutes twenty-four hours a day, and saved us lots of time. Once we arrived in Plattsburgh, it was just a short drive to the Comfort Inn and Suites, where we were staying for our trip.

The next morning, we bundled up (it was cold – about 12 degrees), and headed out to Ausable Chasm, a popular summer attraction that is now offering winter tours. Guests can choose from a 30-minute self-guided tour, or a one or two-hour guided tour. We did both the 30-minute tour and the guided tour, and absolutely loved them. Our guide was incredibly informative and helpful, and the kids loved walking on the paths right by the cliffs and falls. When the paths are icy (as they were on our trip), guests are provided with ice cleat to put on their shoes, and if it’s snowy, guests are provided with snowshoes.

The next day, we drove about an hour and a half to Titus Mountain Family Ski Center for a morning of skiing. The kids were enrolled in ski school, since they’d only skied one time. Of course, by the end of the lesson, my daughter was whizzing by me on the mountain, as I struggled in my class (I’m very much a beginner). Titus Mountain seems to be the perfect place for families to visit – it’s small enough to be approachable, but had lots of really great instructors.

We’ll definitely be back to this area – perhaps in the spring or summer so we can see the gorgeous Ausable Chasm at a different time of year!

It’s the holiday season, why not spend your Christmas vacation doing a little window shopping. You don’t have to buy presents, you can just look. Holiday window decorations are the best of the year, and they’re free for your gazing pleasure. Saving money is my favorite.

This Christmas window is in New York City at the New Museum. It appears that alien kids love the holidays as much as the rest of us. Who knew? Stop in on your New York City holiday vacation!

The New Museum is located at:

235 Bowery

New York, NY 10002

212.219.1222

It’s just one of the many great museums in NYC. Also, one of the great holiday windows! Two birds, people. Two birds.

Please note that the New Museum in New York has special holiday hours that can be found on their website.

This month we are featuring Holiday Window Decorations! Normally on Tuesdays we run the UpTake Tuesday Roadside Attractions Series.
Nantucket Harbor at Christmas Time

Imagine the most quaint, historic little town imaginable, a place that is equally charming and upscale. Then, imagine that place decorated for Christmas. That is exactly the scene at Nantucket Noel, a month-long holiday celebrate which is in full force over the Nantucket Stroll weekend (which is when we visited).

Visit the quaint Main Street in Nantucket, where each business, in conjunction with local nonprofit organizations, has decorated a tree in front of the store. Check out the Nantucket Whaling Museum, where eighty trees, all uniquely decorated, are on display. My kids loved walking up and down Main Street and through the museum, pointing out their favorite trees.

During the stroll weekend, there is something for everyone, including art gallery parties, craft shows, shopping discounts, tasting menus at local restaurants, and the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus via Coast Guard ship. My kids happily waited in line to greet Santa at the Jared Coffin House – despite the line. Nantucket Noel is really the epitome of the spirit of Christmas, and our whole family loved it.

Not every restaurant and hotel is open in December, so it’s best to check well in advance before making plans. Ferries do run, but on an abbreviated schedule, so make sure you make reservations for both legs of your journey. During Nantucket Noel, we stayed at Harborview Place – a community of absolutely gorgeous vacation homes located right in town.

Disclosure: The Nantucket Chamber of Commerce and Harborview Place provided transportation and accommodations for our stay.

Myrtle Beach, SC gets lots of attention for being a sunny family destination brimming with beaches, water parks and Southern hospitality. The fun has increased considerably with the opening of the SkyWheel attraction on Myrtle Beach’s new boardwalk. Flying into the airport, you’ll spot the slowing turning wheel, especially at night, when there’s a light show. But once you get up close, you realize that it’s much more than a fancy ferris wheel.

The most striking detail is that the seats are enclosed. The Sky Wheel boasts 42 glass-enclosed gondola’s that overlook the Atlantic Ocean and much of Myrtle Beach. It winds 200 feet above sea level and is reportedly the only observation wheel of it’s kind in the U.S. Sitting inside a gondola and gazing down the boardwalk, the views are lovely. Although I didn’t quite spot neighboring North Carolina as the attendant claimed. For $12 for adults and $8 for children, you get to slowing spin around for about three revolutions. There’s even a $50 VIP experience that includes special access to a gondola sporting Ferrari leather seats and a glass bottom for views below and above. It’s a nice ride but may be a little scary for those afraid of heights. After the ride, head to the Landshark Bar & Grill next door and sample the fish tacos and chips with salsa.

Disclosure: The Sky Wheel excursion was part of a sponsored media trip.

When thinking of Orlando the last thing to come to mind is probably ice. But each year at this time the Gaylord Palms brings in two million pounds of ice and world renowned ice carvers from China to create a winter wonderland in the tourism center of the Sunshine State. Their ICE festivities have become a winter tradition for many families.

Shrek on Ice

Shrek the Halls

A few months ago I wrote that the Gaylord Hotels and DreamWorks® had formed an alliance, which would bring popular DreamWorks® characters into the resorts. The “kick off” event of the alliance is the spectacular ICE, held at each hotel. At the fabulous Gaylord Palms the theme this year is Shrek the Halls, a magical story told in 4 ½ acres of spectacular ice sculptures.

Walking through ICE is breathtaking- and not just because the area is kept at 9ºF. Sculptures of all sizes draw you close to marvel at the detail; signs and narrative tell the story you are seeing.

ICE slide

About half way through ICE are the ice slides. Five slides, created from ice, beckon young and old to take a quick slip.

The most magnificent carvings, however, aren’t of Shrek and the crew, but appear at the end. Carved of crystal clear ice a full Nativity scene is nothing short of awesome.

ICE nativity

Tips for ICE:

Wear jeans, warm socks, close toed shoes and a sweatshirt.

Bring gloves or mittens.

A coat is not required as the resort provides heavy parkas- which you must wear if you want to use the slides.

Photos are allowed in ICE, though your camera may take a while to thaw out afterward.

A souvenir photo is taken as you enter ICE; option to purchase.

Kung Fu Panda’s Awesome Snow

Kung Fu Panda Snow

If snow isn’t a natural occurrence where you live your kids will love this! 130 tons of freshly made snow, playground equipment and a carnival slide will keep the kids entertained for the full hour. Po, the Kung Fu Panda, leads you into snow and after it’s over you’ll have your chance to get your picture taken with him (option to purchase).

Tips for Snow:

This event is best done after ICE as the room is kept at a “crisp” 55ºF.

Wear water resistant or water proof shoes.

You will be wet when you leave.

Gingerbread Decorating with Gingy

Happy Thanksgiving, America!

You probably already know that the play you did in elementary school depicting a happy meal between people dressed in feathers and people dressed in black and white hats didn’t cover exactly how the meeting between the pilgrims and Indians went down. Hopefully you also know that the people who lived on this land long before the Mayflower docked at Plymouth Rock weren’t actually Indians. Indian, in fact, is an entirely different country on an entirely different continent.

But I digress.

Thanksgiving. Settlers. A meeting (or clashing, you might say) of the old and the new. There’s a few places to go to get a slightly more accurate overview of what was going on in New England in 1620.

Pilgrim Hall; Plymouth, Massachusetts - find out more about the people who really did come over on the Mayflower, as well as the families and community they built on what would become American soil.

National Museum of the American Indian; Washington, D.C. - the Smithsonian always does a phenomenal job and they have access to the best stuff. Added bonus – all of their museums, including the NMOAI, are free.

The Mashantucket Pequot Museum; Mashantucket, CT – Near Mystic, CT, this museum can be challenging to get through because of an overwhelming layout, but it does an impressive job of explaining the conflict between Europeans and native tribes.

Plan a trip to one of these sites in the next 12 months and you can enjoy your turkey guilt free today!

‘Tis the season!

No, I’m not talking about turkey – or even tinsel or mistletoe. It’s the season for embracing the cold and strapping on your skis (or snowboard, if you prefer) to hit the slopes. Grab the kids and head to one of these winter wonderlands.

Keystone, Colorado

Known as a slightly less glamorous (but just as powdery) version of Aspen, Keystone might provide a better bargain for family travelers.

Where to Ski: Keystone Ski Resort

Located within the White River National Forest, this ski haven has 3 peaks, 135 trails, and 20 lifts to transport snow bunnies of every age and ability.

Where to Stay: Inn at Keystone

This hotel provides a great value for families and easy access to the slopes for skiiers.

Stowe, Vermont

Get the views and the weather synonymous with New England winters in this idyllic Vermont town.

Where to Ski: Stowe Mountain Resort

There’s nearly 40 miles of snow-covered trails to be conquered between Spruce Peak and Mount Mansfield, including the 3.7 mile long Toll Road.

Where to Stay: Stowe Mountain Lodge

When you’re not becoming master of the elements, relax at the spa or warm up in a Jacuzzi tub. This is the perfect place for those who like a little luxury with their adrenaline.

Park City, Utah

Where to Ski: Deer Valley Resort

This resort limits the number of lift tickets sold daily and provides ski classes for kids and adults, making it ideal for families still building their confidence on the slopes.

Where to Stay: Arrowleaf at Empire Pass

Reserve two or three bedroom suites with ski-in/ski-out access to the mountains. You won’t find a full-service spa on site, but you can have a raging fire in your own condo.

What makes a for a perfect overnight stopover? For interstate travelers it’s three things; convenience, variety and price.

Convenience in a stopover is easy access. No one likes to drive miles after they get off the Interstate. They want the convenience of having everything nearby, right off the exit.

Variety in a stopover means choices. Choices with accommodations, food and gas. Get a great hotel, grab a bite to eat and fill up the gas tank. One exit should have a variety of all these services.

Price in a stopover is important for the savy traveler. Exits with a variety of gas stations usually means prices are lower. Exits with a variety of food options means fast food to sit-down, and something within your price range. Exits with a variety of lodging options means you’ll probably find a great hotel at a reasonable price.

Santee, South Carolina (I-95, exit 98) is a perfect overnight stopover because it offers the traveler convenience, variety and price. It’s also a popular midway point between New York and South Florida. Here are our picks for perfect overnight stopover hotels in Santee:

Are you looking for a relaxing weekend getaway before the craziness of late December kicks in? The Inn to Inn Cookie Tour, an event I attended last year, is the perfect way to relax, enjoy some beautiful holiday decorations, and get into the Christmas spirit.

The Inn to Inn Cookie Tour, which takes place in the White Mountains of New Hampshire on December 10th and 11th, 2011, will include 12 participating inns and bed and breakfasts. In the self-guided tour, you can sample cookies at each inn, as well as view their specially decorated Christmas tree. No inn is more than 15 minutes from another (and most are much closer), and you can take your time visiting each one on your own schedule.

Last year, when I attended, I loved the chance to see how each inn was decorated for the holidays – they all have their own distinct personality, and each was very different.

Special VIP packages are available for those who want to combine the cookie tour with a one- or two-night stay, and include breakfast, a keepsake ornament, discounted dining coupons, a cookbook, and other fun keepsakes. To book a package, or learn more about the tour, visit the website.

Disclosure: Last year, we were given free tickets to the Cookie Tour, two night’s stay at the Covered Bridge House, and dinner at the 1785 Inn.

Santee, South Carolina is just another small town along seemingly endless I-95. If you aren’t paying attention you just might miss it. But Santee has a special distinction for I-95 travelers. It just happens to be one of the most frequently used overnight stopovers exits for those headed to major east coast destinations.

Santee (I-95, exit 98) is a convenient halfway point between the New York/Philadelphia metro area and Southern Florida. Because of that distinction it has evolved into a travelers “oasis”, ripe with an abundance of hotels, restaurants, gas stations and shopping. Enough of a choice to satisfy the road weary traveler with a little shopping, a hearty meal, and a soft pillow.

Usually when you finds several gas stations clustered around an exit, you great gas prices. Santee consistently has some of the lowest gas prices on I-95, and that’s quite a distinction… I-95 runs from Maine to Florida! So a fill-up here will probably save you a good chunk of change.

There is a decent selection of places to eat, from fast food to sit-down. Clarks’ family Restaurant is a local favorite with great ambiance, delicious home-cooked food, generous portions and reasonable prices. Others just off the exit include Burger King, Cracker Barrel, Denny’s, Hardee’s, KFC, Lone Star Steakhouse, McDonald’s, Noble Roman’s Pizza, Pizza Hut, Shoney’s, and Waffle House just to name a few.

What makes this a great overnight stopover is the selection of hotels. Most of the major chains are represented here including Best Western, Days Inn, Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn (our personal favorite at this exit), Howard Johnson Express, Quality Inn, Super 8, and TraveLodge, as well as several others.

While you won’t find a Walmart or Target nearby to pass the time shopping, there are a few options nearby where you can pick up the essentials. A CVS Pharmacy, and Piggly Wiggly Supermarket are just off the exit.

The I-95 Exit Guide is a great website if you’re thinking about heading down that highway for the holidays. Check them out!

Both are “coastal” cities (one on a river, one on the ocean), both are enjoying sweater weather at this time of year, and both are relaxed and lively with culture but without pretense. The two cities are on opposite sides of the country, a whopping 3,215 miles apart. If you have the chance, check out Portland Maine and Portland Oregon and compare your experiences!

Portland Oregon

Best place to eat: McCormick & Schmicks Harborside at the Marina. The shot above was taken directly to my right as we sat at our table on a lovely summer day. I had the steamed clams and the rare Ahi nicoise salad, and both were excellent.

Best place to sleep: The Hotel Lucia in downtown Portland is such a neat, atypical place to stay. It’s downright cozy, yet has a young and upbeat atmosphere. It’s certainly one of the more stylish hotels I’ve ever seen. Since you’re within walking distance of so much you probably won’t want to eat in, but their on-site restaurant/bar is great for a quick cocktail or full-menu room service.

Best thing to see: Washington Park sits high atop a hill above the city and offers spectacular views. Visit the International Rose Test Garden, the Japanese Garden, and the Hoyt Arboretum all in one lovely day.

Portland Maine

Best place to eat: J’s Oyster, right on the Portland Harbor, is a true Maine dining experience. The wait staff have the classic friendly yet brusque Maine manners, the seafood is pulled right off the boats at the back of the restaurant, Maine-accented conversation around the oyster bar is fast and entertaining, and the place is PACKED all the time. If you go mid-week for a late lunch you should be able to get a table right away, but on the weekends expect an hour wait. I have only one thing to say to you: HAVE THEIR KING CRAB LEGS. Wait, two things: HAVE THEIR LOBSTER ROLL TOO.

Best place to sleep: The Portland Regency Hotel is, in my opinion, the PERFECT place to stay while in Maine. In fact, it’s one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed at, and I’ve been all over this blessed country. Tasteful decor, more than attentive service, and an on-site restaurant that serves the best breakfast around (hit their Sunday brunch if you can).

Best thing to see: View some of the most famous lighthouses of Maine via Lucky Catch Cruises. Catch your own lobsters for dinner, learn about the scattering of Civil War era forts, and flirt with the seals. Private charters and regularly scheduled “Special Excursions” (including bird watching, Fort Gorges and the Lobsterboat and Tugboat races) are also available.
