Disney Dining Plan – How It Works and How to Get It For Free!

Yes, I know this is at the Disneyland Hotel and not at WDW, but it's the only picture I have of my kid and Chef Goofy. Deal with it.

Before I get into the “free” part, a quick word…

Perhaps you’ve heard of the Disney Dining Plan at Walt Disney World and you’ve thought that it sounded like a great idea, but also a little complicated.  That’s fair. You’ve thought sillier stuff and we both know it.  The fact is, the Disney Dining Plan is actually simple and it will save you about 30% per adult. That’s a boatload of money (actual boats may vary).

Disney Dining Plans are only available to guests of Walt Disney World Resorts using Magic Your Way Vacation Packages.  That part is important. When a plan is purchased you are allotted X amount of meals and/or snacks during your stay at over 100 participating eateries on Walt Disney World Resort property.  The meals are broken down by type, meaning you get a certain number (varies by plan) of breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks over the duration of your Disney vacation. Here’s some information from Disney:

*  When booking your vacation, purchase one of the Magic Your Way Vacation Packages that includes a Disney Dining Plan.
* While vacationing at Walt Disney World Resort, choose from over 100 select restaurants available.
* Present your Key to the World card [Editor -- also serves as your room key] to your server or cashier prior to ordering. The Key to the World card electronically monitors your party’s allocated meals.
* Track your meals with the easy-to-read receipt your server will provide you, which displays your remaining meal balance.
* Redeem your meals in any order throughout your package stay until each person’s meal total is complete.

For information on the Magic Your Way Vacation Packages and Disney Dining Plans visit the official Walt Disney World website.

Now for the FREE part: Walt Disney World is currently running a special offer for 5-night/6-day Magic Your Way room and ticket packages booked by August 14, 2010 (package must be used between August 15, 2010 and October 2, 2010). Based on the resort level purchased (Disney Value, Moderate, Deluxe, Deluxe Villa, respectively) guests will be able to add a FREE Disney Dining Plan (a family of 4 would save $689) or a FREE Disney Quick-Service Dining Plan (a family of 4 would save $529). To learn more, check availability and book your vacation please visit this official Walt Disney World page.

The bottom line is that the Disney Dining Plan is a good deal even if you have to pay for it!  Now I’m just a travel editor of very little brain, but it seems to me that Disney vacations are a lot more enjoyable without a constant rumbly in your tumbly. Just a theory.

Pace yourself.

New Beltway Bridge Opening

The Capital Beltway’s outer loop is scheduled to shift onto a new bridge over Route 123 in Tysons Corner next week, as the HOT lanes project advances another step. The Beltway traffic shift, set for Wednesday night, will be followed eight days later by a full weekend closing of Route 123 to demolish the old outer loop bridge. More and more during 2010, the lane and ramp closings that drivers have experienced since the High Occupancy Toll lane project began will evolve into new bridge and overpass openings. Bridge work is underway at 12 Beltway interchanges between the Springfield interchange and just north of the Dulles Toll Road. The HOT lanes project, which will add four tolled lanes to the Beltway, is on schedule for completion in late 2012 or early 2013. The shift of traffic on the outer loop in Tysons Corner is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m.

Rockland, Maine – A Small Town with Big Flavor

Downtown Rockland, Maine

Downtown Rockland, Maine

Pretty much every town in Maine could be considered “small” – Rockland, with a population of around eight thousand, certainly qualifies under any standard. It is located almost exactly mid-way along the coastline between Eastport at the northeastern point, and Kittery at the southwestern point. Rockland is the epitome of the type of quiet seaside fishing villages that Maine is famous for – but the place hosts a lively tourist population in the summertime.

Anthony Bourdain recently hosted an episode of “No Reservations” in the state of Maine, and highlighted not one, but two Rockland restaurants. Primo is renowned for their use of fresh local ingredients and inventive preparations. The atmosphere is elegant and comfortable in the converted 1800’s Victorian home. On the opposite end of the refinement spectrum is Conte’s 1894 Restaurant. The portions are huge, the fish is fresh, the cook is eccentric. Order at the door, bring your own wine, and don’t expect papering OR dessert! A short drive down-coast to Camden takes you to the lovely Francine Bistro, which you really shouldn’t miss if you’re in the area! Too bad Tony skipped that one. I think it’s closed in the winter, though, which is when he chose to visit.

A misty morning in Samoset Resort.

A misty morning in Samoset Resort.

Among the most popular destinations in Rockland is the beautiful Samoset Resort. The stunningly beautiful grounds lay along the coastline, the resort offers just about every service and amenity available, and it caters equally to families with children and couples looking for romance. The property boasts a variety of lodging, from well appointed hotel rooms to private cottages, and even timeshare condos.

My favorite thing to do in Rockland, by far, is to search out Jess’s Market and procure one of their (should be) world-famous lobster rolls (if you’re cooking for yourself, BUY YOUR SEAFOOD THERE. SERIOUSLY.). Then head on down to the waterfront, find a seat somewhere along the harbor, and watch the world sail by. The air is crisp and salty, the seagulls vie for your attention (and your bread scraps), and life just… slows down. To a pace that should be enjoyed frequently, if not constantly.

I’m going to be there in less than two months. I’ll be sure to take a lot of pictures. And eat lots of lobster.
